September 29, 2013 (RUMBEK) – The caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Lakes
state on Saturday issued a decree dissolving his entire government,
including his deputy.

The surprise move by Matur Chuol Dhuol came just two days after President
Salva Kiir paid a courtesy visit to the region.

The governor, who is yet to announce a new cabinet, also slashed the
numbers of ministries from 14 to just nine.

Dhuol was appointed in January to take charge of the state affair governor
after the president sacked Chol Tong Mayay, the elected governor over
rising insecurity concerns.

In April, however, the caretaker governor reshuffled the state
administration and formed a new cabinet, appointing new advisors and county
commissioners.

His cabinet, critics said, fell short of fulfilling the ruling party (SPLM)
policy of the 25% allocation given to women representatives.

Since he assumed office, the acting governor has faced widespread
criticisms from Lakes state citizens, many of whom oppose his military
approach of governance.

In May, Lakes state lawmakers threatened to impeached him, if he continued
oppressing citizens.

An election which was to be held 60 days after the caretaker governor was
appointed has not been honoured, contrary to the provisions of the
country’s Transitional Constitution.

Several activists, lawmakers and politicians remain opposed to Dhuol stay
in office, despite constant use of force to silence his critics.
