On September 28, 2013 at 10:30 pm SAF forces from Um Shoran engaged
SPLA-N forces between the villages of Tess and Buram. At the same time, a
SAF demolition team destroyed the bridge on the road between Tess and
Buram. Once the bridge was destroyed the SAF force moved back to Um Shoran.
At the beginning of 2012 SAF forces including some members of Sudan's
Revolutionary Guard tried to hold the village of Tess while attacking the
SPLA-N position in Buram. At that time SPLA-N managed to counter the attack
and has been in control of Buram and Tess since.

On August 31, SPLM Secretary General Yasir Arman said in a release that
the SPLA-N would begin a one-month "unilateral" ceasfire to assist
civilians affected by flooding across Sudan. In the past month the UN
estimates more than 70,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 300,000
people affected. South Kordofan has not been as seriously affected as other
northern states, but Arman says "SPLA-N soldiers are ordered to help the
civilian populations in whatever way possible, especially in South
Kordofan/Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile." The ceasefire declaration is the
first announced by either side since the resumption of conflict in 2011.
However, according to Arman, the ceasefire does not include "moving targets
and does not prejudice acts of self defense."
