By James Deng Dimo *WAU, 6 December 2013 [Gurtong] -* The law will help in protecting their cultural norms such as marriage, inheritance of properties of deceased and issues to do with debasement cases. The plan is backed by many Balanda tribesmen as they believe the law would help them refurbish their cultural ways. The law is also expected to help allow the tribe to reorganize their traditional believes after the long 21-year-civil war left behind cultural assimilations. Speaking to Gurtong, Arkangel Njofo Tartisio chairperson for Greater Bahr el Ghazal State’s Advocates Bar Association and also a leading figure in establishing the local Balanda traditional customary law, said the law will protect their tribe from other tribes’ influence and that any member who gets in trouble will be judged based on the customary law. “The law will enlighten other tribes on the bureaucratic average followed when attempting to marry from Balanda tribe. That’s basically one first provisional step for marriage before asking the hand of a bride in marriage,” said Tartisio.
