December 8, 2013 (JUBA) – South Sudanese security personnel confiscated
copies of a number of newspapers that published a press conference by
senior leaders of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)
against their current chairman.

On Friday, several members of the highest executive organ of the SPLM, the
Political Bureau (PB), led by the first deputy chairman, Riek Machar,
including members of the National Liberation Council (NLC), held a press
conference accusing the South Sudan’s president and party chairman, Salva
Kiir, of “dictatorial tendencies” and mismanaging the party and government.

The press conference held at the SPLM leadership house in Juba was covered
by dozens of various media houses, local and international.

Among the leaders that held the press conference against Kiir’s actions
included Robecca Nyandeng, Pagan Amum, Deng Alor, Alfred Lado, Chol Tong,
Taban Deng, John Luk, Adwok Nyaba, Majak Agot, Oyai Deng, Madut Biar, Gier
Chuang, Luka Monoja, Cirino Hiteng, Ezekiel Lol, and others.

Immediately after the press conference, elements of security personnel
warned the media representatives not to broadcast or publish the contents
of the event.

However, the international media present such as *Sky News TV* was the
first to broadcast the whole press conference live directly from the scene,
while others such as *Al Jazeera TV* had to broadcast it a day later.

Many FM radio stations in South Sudan such as the UN sponsored *Miraya* FM
and *Eye radio*, among others, also broadcast the same event across the
country.

However, the state-owned *SSTV* and radio could not broadcast it despite
the presence of their crew at the press conference.

The *Citizen* newspaper and TV also shied away from publishing and
broadcasting the event, probably for fear of threats from the security
personnel.

On Saturday copies of the Arabic newspaper *Al Masir* were confiscated at
Juba International Airport for comprehensively publishing the event.

The Editor-in-chief of *Al Masir* newspaper, Mathiang Cirino, on Saturday
said his driver and all the copies of the newspaper were confiscated and
taken to the national security office at Jebel, but were later on released
for distribution.

Also on Saturday were copies of the *Juba Monitor* newspaper and its owners
ordered not to distribute their copies because they covered the press
conference.

Meanwhile the second deputy SPLM chairperson, James Wani, also the vice
president of the country, has announced a counter-press conference to be
held on Sunday at the same SPLM leadership house.
