NBGS Ex-Combatants’ Productive Skills Training Concludes A two-day workshop on productive skills for ex-combatants in Northern Barh el Ghazal State (NBGS) on Tuesday concluded in the state capital, Aweil. 11 December 2013
By Abraham Agoth *CAIRO, 11 December 2013 –* At least 50 government officials, representatives of organized forces and non-governmental organizations attended the workshop. It focused on the South Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme and its implementation, target groups, and the need for partnership with other stakeholders. The training according to a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) press statement is within the country’s strategy of creating other small business projects and small income generating activities to the heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle. This group of people believed to be incapable of continuing to perform in their demanding tasks of defending the nation, is assured of improved life when they were retrenched. They have been told they still can live good life away from being soldiers. While opening the training workshop, the State Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports Mareng Chuor Deng said the reintegration of ex-combatants is very important in preventing criminal activities. “If we leave them hanging around, they will be part and parcel of the criminals infiltrating our community,’’ he said. DDR Commission State Director Wilson Lual Lual said both ministries and local communities have an important role to play in reintegrating ex-combatants. “When given the necessary technical training, the ex-combatants will play a key role in supporting the local economy,” he said. “In an area where there is no carpenter (for example), an ex-combatant trained in carpentry skills will fill the gap in community needs.” Lual said DDR programme targets 150,000 ex-combatants from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and other organized forces. UNMISS Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State Coordinator Seth Kumi said UNMISS would continue to support the programme.
