Ten arrested over foiled coup attempt

*JUBA, 17 December 2013 *– Ten people have been arrested in Juba in
connection with the foiled coup attempt on Sunday against the
democratically elected Government of the Republic South Sudan, the
government has announced.

In a press statement at the Office of the President this morning, Hon
Micheal Makuei named those arressted as:



1. Oyay Deng Ajak
2. Geir Choung Aloung
3. Majak Agot
4. John Luk Jok
5. Cirino Hiteng
6. Koul Tong Mayai
7. Izekeil Lul
8. Deng Alor Koul
9. Madut Bier and
10. Kosti Manibe



Five of the members including ‘the leader’ Dr. Riek Machar are still at
large, Hon Makuei said. He named the others as:



1. Alfred Ladu Gore
2. Pagam Amum
3. Taban Deng Gai and
4. Adwok Nyaba



“Those who are still at large will be apprehended, according to our
sources, some of them have moved out of Juba town towards the Terekeka
areas, north of the Capital Juba, probably with the intention of moving
towards the base of Dr. Reik……….. Whether they will reach there is a
situation that we will wait to see” Hon. Makuie said.



The minister also said President Kiir early today held a meeting with the
leaders and elders of Nuer community in order to clarify the ‘misleading
information’ that Nuer as a tribe is been targeted. "The composition of the
people involved dismisses this remour.. these people are from various
states of South Sudan with only one of them from the Nuer tribe, Mikuei
reiterated while said this should be seen a a coup attempted by a group of
people not a tribe.
