Last weekend clashes erupted between military units that the government in Juba called a coup attempt and blamed it on former VP Riek Machar and other senior officials from the country’s ruling party of Sudan people Liberation Movement (SPLM). United Nations peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told a closed session of the UN Security Council (UNSC) Wednesday that according to local sources, the hospitals recorded approximately 500 deaths and 800 injuries. The NCF chairman, Faroug Abu Issa, told *Sudan Tribune* on Wednesday that they sympathize with the people of South Sudan and demanded the conflicting parties to stop fighting and resort to dialogue and peaceful solution, pointing that their contacts achieved considerable success. He said that president Silva Kiir Mayardit and his cabinet welcomed those contacts particularly when they were reminded of the NCF desire to mediate between the conflicting parties within the SPLM which was indicated to Kiir during his recent visit to Khartoum. Abu Issa stressed that they are closely following the situation in South Sudan despite difficulties in communications, pointing that they don’t consider their contacts interference in South Sudan’s internal affairs. He expressed hope that unity of Sudan would be restored when objective conditions exist and in the forefront of which is a democratic regime that recognises ethnic, cultural, and political pluralism. South Sudan seceded from Sudan when the South Sudanese overwhelmingly voted for independence in January 2011, and the world’s newest nation, after its independence in July of the same year, quickly became the 193rd member of the United Nations and 54th member of the African Union. Abu Issa further pointed that conflicting leaders in Juba are friends and colleagues of the NCF leaders, asserting that instability in South Sudan would endanger Sudan.
