*TORIT, 28 January 2014 [Gurtong] - *Hon. Paska Hifita Oduho, State
Humanitarian Sub-Committee chairperson said six cluster sites of the IDP
camps in Nimule have poor hygiene and sanitation facilities as there are no
safer places to defecate in. The IDPs have asked the host communities to
help share with them their latrines.

Hon. Hifita also noted that water sources for domestic use by all the
affected groups are inadequate, forcing the IDPs to drink from Unyama River.

According to the report, there is high risk of contracting water and air
borne diseases. There are already cases of watery diarrhea and measles in
the camps.

The Committee says all the IDPs and indigenous people now depend on the
only health facility, Nimule County Hospital.

Since the start of the political crisis, the number of patients received
per day has risen three times the normal level and this could not be easily
managed by the only two doctors at the facility.

Hon. Hifita, who is also the state Gender, Culture and Social Development
Minister has affirmed her government's commitment to ensure basic needs
reach the IDPs with the support of partners.

Many of the IDPs are currently overcrowded in Torit and Magwi counties and
are in dire need of attention from government and UN Agencies according to
state officials.
