*TORIT, 31 January 2014 [Gurtong] - *Speaking to Gurtong this morning over
telephone, the Chairperson of the State Humanitarian Sub-Committee Paska
Hifita Oduho confirmed the distribution of relief to the IDPs in Nimule.

Emmanuel Radio reported that Emergency Relief Coordinator Ghebrehiwet
Hailit said another 7,000 IDPs in Nimule had previously benefited from the
same Plan International emergency food assistance.

Hailit said the ongoing distribution is a-week exercise which includes food
items such as sorghum, beans, cooking oil and salt among others.

Late last week, the state Health Ministry through a state Emergency Team
revealed it managed to reach 35,358 IDPs.

Hon. Hifita who is also the state Gender, Culture and Social Development
Minister, thanked the state humanitarian agencies for their generosity and
readiness to assist the IDPs.

She said the NGOs have helped in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
(WASH), food and non-food assistance..

She said the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) provides non-food items and the
UN-World Food Programme (WFP) is responsible for food items while UNICEF is
ensuring there is enough water for the IDPs' domestic use.

Plan International, CARITAS, AVSI and UNHCR among other organisations have
also indicated commitment toward helping the IDPs.

She appealed to the host communities in the state to remain cooperative so
to ensure essential services reach the IDP population.

Since the political unrest broke out mid-last month, thousands of people
have been displaced within and without. Those in camps and UN bases are in
dire need of humanitarian aid.
