As calm returned to Juba after 15 December fighting between government forces and what was a political difference that turned into rebellion has continued to affect other states and has claimed lives of many and destruction of property. Last week rebels loyal to Riek Machar took control of Baliet County and destroyed property, infrastructure and systematic killing and torturing of civilians. Currently survivors of Baliet fighting are in Akoka and Maluth Counties. Civilians who spoke to South Sudan Today explained the atrocities committed by rebels. "They don't care whether you are disabled, blind, woman or a child, they kill anyone. They also say as long as you are Jang (Dinka), we will kill you, we don't know the meaning of gender", said Miyen, a student of primary school who narrowly escaped because of knowing the language of the attackers. Deng, an elder who escaped with one child saw his family, and other relatives being killed. "They tie them up with ropes and shoot them. Others say don't play with bullets, take them" (women, children and old men) into the house, lock it and burn them. Others are tied and thrown into the river", explained Deng who is currently at Maluth. Last week a group of rebel fighters reported themselves to Maluth County accusing rebels of committing serious crimes against humanity and that was not what they were fighting for. Rev. James Tor Monybuny, the County Commissioner of Baliet County, who earlier escaped to Akoka County, said the IDPs who fled the fighting are in desperate of humanitarian needs. "Many of these civilians were scattered into bushes and they arrived one by one on daily basis with nothing in their hands." The army recaptured Malakal from rebels last week. After learning that government forces are in full control of Malakal, many civilians who were in hiding including those in UNMISS compound started trekking back to their homes. UN estimates nearly 450,000 people have been displaced and thousands others took refuge in the neighboring countries while thousands others killed. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
