By Waakhe Simon Wudu and Petia Suliman *JUBA - 7 February 2014 [Gurtong] -* The road project is estimated to cost SSP11m and the grant comes from the World Bank. The contract signing between the Ministry of Transport, Roads and Bridges and Kirinyaga Construction Limited took place on Wednesday as the work is expected to finish within nine months. The Deputy Minister of Transport, Roads and Bridges Simon Mijak said the objective of the reconstruction of the road is to enhance "connectivity to agricultural services." He said it is to improve access to high agricultural potential areas and enhance the capacity of participating rich agricultural areas to accessible markets in the country. "The project covers construction, periodic maintenance and spot improvement", Mijak said. The poor state of Yei -Lasu road according to locals and officials is such a big a challenge to the communities using it. It has inhibited the residents from accessing effective health services, education and transaction of trade between Yei town and Juba. When completed, the Commissioner of Yei County Juma David Augustine said the road will help wipe out the challenges. "The completion of the reconstruction of this road will not only affect development to the Central Equatoria State government but also South Sudan," Juma said. Hon. Daniel Lokoroto, an area Member of Parliament representing Lasu at the Central Equatoria State assembly said inaccessibility of services by the members of his community as a result of the poor state of the road since 2005 has remained one of the biggest challenges. He said farmers are unable to transport their produce to big markets in Yei and Juba; pregnant women sometimes deliver on the road before reaching Yei Hospital since motorcars cannot access the area.
