Attack At Panyijar County "Sadly, prominent elders such as former Paramount Chiefs (Keah Tut Ngoal, Nyuon Yar Buol) were victims of the attack. The elders were those I would call "connectors." 09 February 2014
"Dear Gurtong Editor, "Let me hope you are well. Since December 15, 2013 incident there has been media gap especially in communities affected by the conflict. On February 07, 2014 Panyijiar County was attacked by SPLA Army elements accompanied by armed civilians from Lakes State. No one is reporting this in the media and as a result I am taking to you to report it. Below is a message I posted on my facebook on the matter. It condenses the whole matter. "It is going to be the second day now since my community (Panyijiar County) was attacked by Army and civilian elements coming from the direction of Lakes State. So far in the body counts, twenty-nine (29) dead bodies are confirmed. Scores were wounded. "The attack occurred at about noon on February 07, 2014. The County HQs was attacked and what could burn was burned down and eleven (11) people were killed there. At Kol, Pathiel and Yuop, eighteen (18) people were killed and 12 wounded. "There are still unconfirmed number of missing residents who could not be confirmed dead or alive. Elderly people, women and children were victims to the attack. "Sadly, prominent elders such as former Paramount Chiefs (Keah Tut Ngoal, Nyuon Yar Buol) were victims of the attack. The elders were those I would call "connectors." They were part of the Wunlit Peace Initiatives, which prepared the ground for Naivasha Peace process. Even after retiring from their active duties as Chiefs, they continued to devote their time to peaceful relations between the Nyuong Nuer and Dinka communities of Lakes State. It is indeed a great lose to Nyuong community and to the nation as such people who are willing to bridge tribal divide are rarely found. "In current crisis, they had urged their community to practice restrain. Since December 15 Juba incident, Nyuong Nuer community had not attack in Lakes State and the deceased deserve some credit for this calm from Nyuong community. Sadly such people become victims of tribally motivated actions. We would need their wisdom and influence in bridging current tribal divide between the Nuer and Dinkas for peace purposes now or in the near future. It is sad that they will be missed when their grass-root wisdom would have been resourceful. "In the incident, unknown number of cows were driven out of Panyijiar County HQs, Kol, and Mayom Payams." "I am not a journalist yet would like to fill in the gap because this need to be reported. Thank you."
