AWEIL, 16 February 2014- According to the boma authority, the children
found a strange pen-like material whichthey took and played with.

"It is very an unfortunate incident that there are still hazardous
substances which are parts of landmine remains and land grenade previously
used during the civil war between Khartoum and South Sudan," a local
Football Association chairperson in the county, Makom Dhal told journalists
at Amothic boma.

According to one of the survivers, they found the ordinance in a hole and
thought it was something harmless. The three kids: Adim Adim, Lual Dut and
Majok Wol were severely injured at the stomachs, necks, hands and heads.

The boma authorities appealed for an immediate demining exercise to be
carried out in the area to avoid continunation of such incidents.

This according to residents in the area is the fourth incidence in the
area. "This matter is of great concern to every resident. Everybody is
worried of what to do regarding these rampant mines and hidden grenades
presence in the area," Dhal said.

"These were hidden during the war and as this area was occupied by SPLA by
then, there is likelihood of both sides having hidden such weapons here for
trapping each other," Dhal lamented.

He urged the humanitarian organizations and the government to work closely
to find a lasting solution to the problem.
