JUBA - 19 February 2014 [Gurtong] - The presidential spokesperson Ateny Wek
Ateny reiterated the Juba government's commitment to respecting of the
cessation of hostilities (CoH) signed last month.

Media agencies on Tuesday reported the talks in Addis Ababa between the two
parties had stalled over "unmet" demands by the rebels.

"President Salva Kiir instructed the government team in Addis Ababa to
continue with the peace talks in Addis Ababa. The President is willing to
bring peace," Ateny said.

On Tuesday morning, fresh fighting broke out in Malakal between rebels and
government forces. Both sides traded accusations of being attacked first by
the other.

Ateny however told the press in Juba on Tuesday that the fighting which
according to him was started by the rebels indicated a clear violation of
the CoH.

"Although violation of [the] agreement, cessation of hostilities may lead
to violation of agreement, the government still remains committed to the
peace talk's process with the rebels," Ateny reiterated.

The rebels on Tuesday claimed they control Malakal but the government
refutes it.

The fresh fighting in Malakal is being condemned by several actors
including the United Nations and the United States embassy in Juba.

Both warned both parties involved respect the agreement and that the
situation is likely worsen humanitarian and insecurity situation unless
both parties refrain.
