JUBA - 19 February 2014 [Gurtong] - "Continued fighting between the parties over control of the state capital will only exacerbate an already dire situation for the civilian population and undermine the efforts to stabilize the situation in South Sudan," UNMISS warns in a press statement. "It is imperative that both parties fully comply with the Cessation of Hostilities-agreement, signed under the auspices of IGAD. It falls upon both sides to ensure a swift establishment of the monitoring and verification mechanism, which is critical for progress in the negotiations and for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in South Sudan." The fighting between the rebels and government forces in Malakal broke out on Tuesday morning despite agreement on cessation of hostilities by both parties signed last month. Malakal is a strategic gateway to the oil fields in Upper Nile State. Describing the fighting as "heavy" between the two parties, UNMISS says there have been simultaneously, inter-communal clashes also that flared up within the Protection of Civilians (POC) site within the UNMISS compound, which also came under cross fire. The Mission said a total of ten persons died in its hospital from injuries received both from outside the compound and from the clashes within the POC area. It however denied use of firearms during the inter-communal clashes. A number of IDPs have also received medical treatment. The situation at the UNMISS camp was brought under control, said the statement, adding all UN staff stationed at the UNMISS Malakal compound are safe and accounted for. The UNMISS's Malakal compound protects 21,568 internally displaced persons (IDPs). The Mission strongly condemns those who instigated the inter-communal violence inside the PoC area and reserves the right to take appropriate action against such individuals. UNMISS urges both parties to respect the inviolability of the premises and facilities of the United Nations.
