REMEMBERING MALCOLM X 49 YEARS ON
Ama Biney

Malcolm X, otherwise known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was a fierce
African American human rights crusader with an international agenda.

MALCOLM X AND INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE BLACK STRUGGLE
50th anniversary of the OAAU's memorandum to the OAU
Abayomi Azikiwe

Malcolm X was convinced that racism against Black people was a global
problem. He campaigned in Europe, Middle East and Africa against the
scourge. At the Second Annual Summit of the OAU in Cairo 50 years ago, he
made a direct appeal to African leaders for solidarity in ending the plight
of African Americans under US national oppression

DEVELOPMENT OR FRAUD? ANOTHER COASTAL PARADISE TO DIE FOR BIG OIL
Ali Noor

A new 32 berth port, to ship South Sudanese oil to China, is planned for
the Lamu archipelago, a stunning green field heritage site in northern
coastal Kenya, teeming with rare species, coral reefs and marine
biodiversity and, of course, people. But none of this richness, or the
indigenous people for whom this is home, seem to matter to the Government
of Kenya and private developers

CHINA IN AFRICA: DEVIL OR ANGEL?
Luo Jianbo and Zhang Xiaomin

China has never denied that its Africa policy has its own strategic
interests. However, one of the most outstanding features of China's policy
is its aspiration to promote South-South cooperation and to achieve the
renaissance of Asia and Africa. Unlike the former colonial masters, China's
engagement provides Africa with new development opportunities

FIGHTING DISPARITY: THE DREAM OF DAVOS ELITES
Farooque Chowdhury

The world's richest nations have admitted that global inequality is
appalling. But are they prepared to radically change the prevailing
capitalist system the harbours rich tax thieves and appropriators of
labour, who increase their wealth with political favours? A system that
safeguards the interests of the minority at the expense of the majority
poor?

FORWARD TO A MASS WORKERS' PARTY IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
Paper presented at a meeting on 'South Africa today: A turning point in the
struggle,' organised by Socialist Action, Connecticut, 8 February 2014.
Shaun Whittaker

South Africa's largest union has resolved to establish a socialist
movement. While this is an attractive idea, it is important to note that
mass workers' parties have been thwarted elsewhere. The Left might have to
contemplate whether it wants to build a social-democratic mass workers'
party that will squander another 20 years ora revolutionary mass workers'
party that will engage in mass action.

ADVERTISING AND CENSORSHIP IN EAST AFRICA'S PRESS
Tom Rhodes

Many newspapers in East Africa are thriving--some fat with ads, enjoying
solid circulation and little competition--but there is broad concern that
all that advertising is also promoting self-censorship and corrupting news
coverage

FOR AZIZ SMATI ON VALENTINE'S DAY
Karima Bennoune

In the 1990s, Muslim fundamentalists in Algeria declared Jihad against the

producer of a popular TV show was lucky to survive an assassin's bullets

AMERICA'S 'BIG EARS:'FROM ONE SCANDAL, ANOTHER

A debate has started about the code of conduct that will define the
preservation of public liberties. The courageous Edward Snowden has
achieved his goal to a large extent. His action should also contribute to a

ARE AFRICAN CONFLICTS EXCLUSIVE TO AFRICANS?
A critical look at the role of Western mainstream media
Abdul Ghelleh

The Western media misdiagnoses the root causes of African conflicts and
reduces them to tribalism and religion as in the respective case of South
Sudan and the Central African Republic. The complexity that lead to
conflict need to be reported on by the Western media

5 Letters & Opinions
RACISM AT WORLD BANK
Welansa Asrat

Racism at World Bank

Dear Editor,

I recently read about the extent of the racism at the WB in an article on
Yonas Biru and I am absolutely horrified, as my father had worked there for
5 years. I knew he hated it but I didn't know it was this bad. I'm so glad
that you, Justice for Blacks and Dr. Biru, are fighting the good fight.

I have been posting the material on twitter under the hashtag
#WorldBankJimCrow2 . Please encourage others to do the same. I have learned
that twitter is an effective tool when dealing with these powerful entities.

My Twitter handle is @dr_asrat .

Best regards,

Welansa
