*JUBA - 23 February 2014 [Gurtong] - *UN Undersecretary General and
Executive Director of the UN Women Ms. Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, upon
visiting South Sudan on a mission to acquaint herself with the situation
women are undergoing through in the country on Wednesday, she accused the
rivaling factions in the country of being involved in raping women.

Ms. Mlambo however, was not in a position to point out how many women are
raped so far and their cases are documented by the UN Women.

She said victims only claimed of being abused and she could not also name
perpetrators as yet.

Izeduwa Derex Briggs, the Country Representative of the UN Women for South
Sudan said that government needs to ensure justice prevail by bringing the
perpetrators to book.

Of the over 800,000 people affected by the ongoing crisis that broke out
last year in December, Mlambo said at least 70% of the victims are women.

"Women have lost their income and their wellbeing and their dignity and
they are fearful for their lives," Mlambo said.

"Women have lost partners. They don't know where some of their partners are
where some of their children are.

"Women are in pain because they have seen their young people being taken to
become combatants at tender age where they should be at home with their
parents and going to school" she said.

Ms Mlambo's visit also aimed at backing the South Sudanese women lobby to
participate in the peace making process of restoring stability in the
country after the 2013 December fiasco.
