Lakes State Government Suspends Four Senior Officials Lakes State Government has suspended four senior government officials for having masterminded the teachers' peaceful demonstration in Rumbek Town. 27 February 2014
By Gabriel Mayom *RUMBEK, February 27, 2014 (Gurtong) - *Last Wednesday, the teachers in Lakes State took to the streets protesting their delayed salary payment. The state Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol immediately suspended the state government Secretary General Martin Maciec Kuc, Abraham Makur Mangok, Director General in the ministry of Public Service and Labour, Kongor Deng Kongor Director General in the ministry of Education and James Kon Chadhor, the head of Workers Trade Union in Lakes State. The suspension was not welcome by public. Governor Dhuol insisted that South Sudan's central government did not allow payment of allowance to civil servants except the organized forces. "The allowance payment was only scheduled for the organized forces and the SPLA army but no civil servant is being given allowance," said Dhuol on local radio. One of the suspendedofficials however said that the central government has granted payment of allowance to all equal level government employees. A director who requested for anonymity said: "The Director General in Finance paid allowances to all director generals of different ministries with amount of SSP3, 000 each, leaving all junior staff and junior directors without allowances." "Their allowances have been diverted by the governor to construct his private house - all civil servants allowance and anyone who questions him on allowances could face arrest or dismissal from government," he added. On Wednesday, a group of teachers mobilized themselves across schools operating within Rumbek town and described the Lakes state government's decision to suspend their allowances as a "war within to destabilize education.
