Pull out of South Sudan – Uganda Parliament tells Uganda Army May. 27 Featured, Uncategorized 4 comments
UGANDA MONITOR, KAMPALA, Wednesday, MAY/27/2015, SSN BY: Nelson Wesonga, Uganda Parliament; Uganda National Parliament yesterday called for the withdrawal of Ugandan troops from South Sudan. The committee’s resolution, informed by a report by the Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs, said the cost of maintaining the troops in South Sudan is high. “The committee urges government to continue engaging Igad to ensure a neutral force is deployed,” the report said. “This is because the continued presence of the UPDF in South Sudan is proving to be a very high cost to the Ugandan taxpayer.” The report did not, however, say how much money has been spent on the UPDF in South Sudan. According to the Defence ministry, the monthly expenditure for the Uganda People’s Defence Force in South Sudan is Shs7 billion. Unlike the UPDF’s operations in Somalia under the African Union, which are financed by the AU, Uganda largely meets the costs of its operations in South Sudan. Bearing in mind that the government deployed the UPDF in South Sudan in December 2013, the government has so far spent about Shs119 billion to maintain the troops there. Not moving out However, Defence minister Crispus Kiyonga during the plenary, said the UPDF would remain in South Sudan. “The Igad force that was supposed to take the place of the UPDF has not yet become a reality. To that extent, therefore, we will remain put in South Sudan.” He said South Sudan meets the UPDF’s fuel bills for operations within South Sudan adding: “When it comes to any allowances they might be entitled to, these costs are met by the taxpayer of the Republic of Uganda.” The numbers: Money Uganda Army spent so far—- Shs119b (One hundred nineteen BILLION shillings). Amount UPDF has spent on the mission in South Sudan since 2013. This has been obvious from the onset of their intervention. The fuel bill of UPDF in South Sudan is footed by Kiir but now fuel has become one scarce commodity in the whole of the country. Already Ugandan tax payers are feeling the pinch of their leaders’ actions: budget for the financial year 2015/16 has been reviewed upwards by an astronomical figure of about Ugx. Six trillion! ( about $2 billion). This all translates to the U neccesary tax burden the Ugandan tax payers must shoulder because of their leaders’ actions! Museveni needs billions of Ugandan shillings to win the forth coming general elections slated for early next year. All these financial resources required to ‘lubricate the ballot boxes’ must be squeezed from the poor Ugandan citizens. By the time many come to realisation that Museveni’s intervention in South Sudan is not neccesarily to keep Kiir in poor but continuation of the war with Al Bashir, many Ugandans will be leaving below the poverty line and South Sudan will be in its state of the mid 90s! The question to ask is: why must young people die in droves for a futile war? Reply info@southsudannation May 28, 2015 at 7:09 pm Eastern, Museveni is typical of other failed and authoritarian leaders in Africa and therefore, don’t be surprised to learn soon that his fellow failed and hopeless Kiir the Killer will be pouring some millions of our own dollars to abet in the corrupted election of Museveni….again. Ugandans, much oppressed by M7, are pressing for the nearly 80 years old dictator to quit, aka… retire to live with his cows, but obviously, for the survival of his inept friend Kiir, Museveni thinks that he has to persevere in power for the sake of Kiir. My guess… M7 would rather get rid of Kiir (ala John Garang…) when things don’t favour his machinations. Then he M7 would retire to drink his milk at Rwakuta….somewhere in the Ankole highlands.
