*Unicef Sudan to start enrolment campaign for 300,000 out-of-school
children*

*May 31 - 2015 KHARTOUM In cooperation with the Sudanese state Ministries
of Education, Unicef will conduct a promotion campaign for the enrolment of
more than 300,000 out-of-school children in the country. The campaign aims
to promote the importance of education and the enrolment of children, in
particular among the most marginalised communities. Some 3 million
children between the ages of 5 to 13 do not go to school. More than half of
them are girls. A further 15 percent of the basis school pupils are at risk
of dropping out before their final grade. “At particular risk of being
excluded from school are girls, children affected by war, and displaced,
nomads, children in rural areas, poor children, and some ethnic and
religious groups,” Unicef stated. The UN Children Fund, with support from
the EU and the Qatari Educate A Child (EAC) programme, plans to reduce the
number of out-of-school children in Sudan by 321,561 children in 2015, with
at least 50 percent being girls. *
*The sessions will start in June, in Khartoum, the four eastern Sudan
states, Blue Nile state, the five Darfur states, and South, West, and North
Kordofan. P**arents will be encouraged to enroll their children in schools
or alternative learning places, through radio flashes, posters, music, and
community discussions. The campaign also aims at promoting on-the-spot
registration of children at key campaign locations. Pupils from poor
families will be supported with learning materials and educational
supplies.*

*120 ‘deserted villages’ in East Jebel Marra, North Darfur*

*May 28 - 2015 EAST JEBEL MARRA / TAWILA LOCALITY During the last two
months, some 120 villages in East Jebel Marra and Tawila locality in North
Darfur, have been abandoned, owing to attacks by the paramilitary Rapid
Support Forces and other militiamen. Most of the villagers fled towards
Shangil Tobaya, Tabit, and Tawila town, where they are surviving in dire
conditions, several newly displaced told Radio Dabanga. Others reported
from East Jebel Marra that the area bordering Tawila locality has become
“entirely desolate. All the people have left the area during the past two
months,” a villager said, “owing to the militia raids on the villages,
their robbing of livestock, and destruction of the mills and the water
sources. A very few people remained in the villages and near the valleys,
to tend their tomato plants and onions.”*
*Last week, militant herders began to release their camels on the farmlands
in the area, the source said. *
