NAIROBI, June 15, 2015 [Gurtong]- Under the auspices of Kenya’s former
President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, the meeting was held at the
Kabarnet Garden in Nairobi.

Moi Africa Institute set the elders of the two sides to talk on the
role of the council of elders in resolving the ongoing conflict in
South Sudan, defining the root causes of the conflict in South Sudan
and elders advice on the way forward.

Justice Ambrose RinyThiik, the Chairman of the Jieng Council of Elders
said that the nation needs peace and unity instead of war that
destroys public property.

He noted that the elders agreed to engage the leaders of South Sudan
to seize the war by all means and to preach the policy of peace and
reconciliation in in the country.

Among the resolutions, signed by the elders reached upon were as
stated in a document,

“We recognize that a solution to the current conflict lies with the
people of South Sudan; therefore, we are committed to explore and
utilize our traditional mechanisms to bring peace and reconciliation.”

Riiny explained that, “we reject the characterization of the current
conflict as a conflict between the Jieng and the Nuer communities and
acknowledge that the conflict emanated primarily from the power
struggle within the SPLM party.”
