*AWEIL, June 15, 2015 [Gurtong] *- According to the women, Peter Majok
Bildit, the Payam Administrator of Maper West and Senior Inspector in the
Local Government Municipality mobilized the women in April to assist in the
construction of a feeder road linking Maper, Maduany and Yith-aluk with
Aweil town and were promised in return they would be offered food stuffs.

However, since the completion of the work in May there have been no food
stuffs distributed to the women.

More than one thousand women gathered in Maper North demanding the
government to intervene and pay them for the work they did.

Anger Kuol, one of the women explains the ordeal.

“We were told to come and make this canal, that there will be a budget for
us. Later on the government officials came and told us that there will be
nothing for us. So we went up to the municipality yesterday. They said they
will look into it. Today we came so that we see what they can offer us be
it quantity and type. We need what was promised to us. We came asking for
what we worked for. If they will give us something or not, we still do not
know. But yesterday they confirmed that there was something. However it is
not clear. We worked 10 consecutive days in the hot sun. Is there anyone
who works for free?” said Anger angrily.

Achol Lual Ungom, one of the women representatives, speaking on behalf of
the women said they are disappointed at the government’s decision.

“The women here all worked. We are disappointed at this information that
there will be nothing to compensate what we worked for. And that’s why all
these days we have not been happy about this. We were just told in the
beginning that we should work and we shall be given, dura (sorghum) oil and
lentils.” She explained.

Deng akot Aru, the Chief of the area said that the work the women were
tasked with has negatively affected some of them.

“Like 3 women had miscarriages when doing this work. Another woman here is
disabled and her farm was destroyed by this work. So after all we found out
that the mistake lies in the hands of local government.” He noted.

A representative at the Ministry of Agriculture in the state, Santino Wol
Aluk said “the government did not tell them they will be given sorghum but
what was agreed was that they shall be supported with tools because the
government does not have sorghum.”

The women were advised by the Ministry to go back to their homes and will
be contacted in the coming days when the government reaches a decision to
solve their grievances.
