*23 June - 2015 KHARTOUM, EL FASHER, NYALA Darfur's largest cities,
Khartoum, El Fasher and Nyala, still experience a lack of potable water,
and their suffering is worsened by the Ramadan and the heat. At least
thirteen neighbourhoods in Khartoum are almost out of water, while the
director of the city's water corporation was fired on Sunday by Governor
Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein. Meanwhile, internally displaced people living
in Otash and El Salam camps near Nyala, South Darfur, complained about the
stalling of a number of water pumps. The shortages have driven up the price
for a barrel or jar of water. Some women told Radio Dabanga that after
hours of waiting in a queue in El Salam, they were sent off, as the water
supply had stopped. The water supply to El Fasher city, North Darfur, has
decreased by more than half of the usual, the water management announced
last week: 17,000 cubic metres per day, instead of the required quantity of
39,000 cubic metres. In Khartoum, many areas still experience a complete
disruption in the water supply. According to reports by our listeners, El
Kalakla El Wehda, Sangat, Halfayat El Mulok, Umbada Sabil, El Arda, El
Fitehab, Abusid Murabat, Khartoum 3 Rumalia, Hila El Jadida, El Goz,
Elduyum East and West, El Sahafa West square 31, and El Azhari districts
are affected by the water outages. Demonstrations

aimed against the scarcity erupted in El Fitehab, Omdurman, on Sunday.
Legislators urgently want to question the Minister of Water Resources and
Electricity for the nationwide crisis in potable water supplies, a MP in
Khartoum stressed on Monday.*
*Sudanese newspaper ceases publication, confiscations
continue*
*23 June - 2015 KHARTOUM The management of *El Akhbar
* newspaper has announced that it will cease publication indefinitely from
Sunday onwards, over what it called "a financial crisis". For unknown
reasons, its print runs were confiscated by the Sudanese security service
twice this month. Last Sunday, journalists working for the daily newspaper
were surprised by the announcement. They had demanded to receive their
monthly salaries since April 2015, which are still not fully paid. Besides
high printing costs and low revenue from advertising, Sudanese newspapers
suffer from frequent punitive measures by the authorities. The print runs
of *El Akhbar* were confiscated by the security service on 8 and 18 June,
together with several other newspapers. It is interesting to note that one
of* El Akhbar
*'s latest articles was a commentary that criticised the Sudanese
president. On Tuesday, the National Intelligence and Security Service
(NISS) seized all copies of *El Midan* newspaper in Khartoum, which is the
mouthpiece of the opposition Sudanese Communist Party. Reasons were not
provided by the security service. Earlier, *El Midan
* published an article about how President Omar Al Bashir departed from
South Africa on Monday 15 June. He escaped

while a court in South Africa had issued an order that barred him from
leaving, until a ruling was made that afternoon on whether Al Bashir should
be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court. Within the
past three weeks, the NISS has confiscated the copies of seventeen daily
newspapers right from the presses. Four even were suspended

for a few days. About 75 newspapers have been seized since the beginning of
2015. Last February, a total of fourteen daily papers were confiscated
