>From a very reliable source on the ground in Fangak county: 27 June 2015: The last week of February and the first week of March 2015, more than 1000 youth and men in Old Fangak Payam were forcefully recruited by General Gabriel Tang, in the whole county over 5000. Some areas don’t have boys over the age of 14 anymore. Now, we have received information that they need more fighters and plan to catch very soon (possibly next week) another 1000 youth and men in Old Fangak, and who knows how many in the county. The last time, all men were called to come to the public square and then forced into a compound, fenced with barbed wire. Then, NGOs could beg for their staff to be released. The rest was taken to war. Is there anybody who has influence to stop this? This recruiting seems to be part of a general surge in opposition areas, as was carried out recently by Johnson Olony in Kodok und Wau Schilluk. 28 June 2015 (morning): Recruitment has started this morning! Even several Primary Eight and other students. 28 June 2015 (later): Around 300 youth were gathered this morning by soldiers who went from house to house. In the end, they took only those who were considered "lapsed" soldiers. But the Primary 8 students were told that they need a student ID, otherwise, the next time, they will be taken. Adult Nuer say that recruitment is necessary and will continue according to how many men are killed on the battle field. From their perspective, it makes perfectly sense. Victory is achieved through sacrifice. Nobody here believes in a negotiated peace settlement, or only with a lot of pressure by controlling strategic locations on the ground. God be with us and the people of South Sudan.
