*June 28 - 2015 KHARTOUM* At least 12 Sudanese medical students, three of
them women, stealthily left Khartoum on Friday to join the combatants of
Islamic State (IS) in Syria. They are all students at the private
University of Medical Sciences and Technolgy, owned by the Minister of
Health of Khartoum state, Mamoun Hemeida. Ten of them hold foreign
passports.
Ahmed Babiker, the dean of Student Affairs at the University, told the
press in Khartoum that it turned out that at least five of the students had
boarded an aircraft to Turkey at Khartoum Airport early on Friday morning.
Another group had left Khartoum on board a Fly Dubai flight. The first
batch was apprehended by Turkish intelligence agents, preventing their
travel to Syria.
The dean further reported that the mother of one of the women students flew
from London to Istanbul, to search for her. He added that another woman
student who “disappeared” is the daughter of the spokesman for the Sudanese
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali El Sadig.
According to El Sadig

the travel was an organised event with high officials involved, otherwise
it would have been impossible for them to travel without being caught. He
told reporters at Khartoum airport that he could not find a single trace of
his daughter on any registration paper at the airport. She obviously had
not been checked by the customs and immigration officers prior to boarding
the aircraft.
In March, at least twelve students and graduates of the University of
Medical Sciences and Technology left to Turkey to join the ranks of IS.
They also came from wealthy Sudanese families, and travelled with their
British passports. Babiker at the time

accused “jihadist networks operating outside the university” of recruiting
the students to join the ranks of the IS.
*Sudan's public order police detain 12 Christian students*
*June 28 - 2015 KHARTOUM *A group of 12 women students were detained by the
Public Order Police on Thursday evening, because of their “scandalous
outfits”.
The young women, wearing trousers and skirts, were held when they were
leaving the Baptist church in El Izba in Khartoum North. They were
transferred to a police station, where two of them were acquitted on
Friday. The agents of the Public Order Police had reconsidered their
opinion about their clothes. The ten others were charged with “deeds
against the public morality” under Article 152 of the 1990 Criminal Code.
*On Sunday morning*

the judge handled the case of one of the accused. Head of the defence
team Muhanad
Mustafa Miir told Radio Dabanga that the hearing of the defence witnesses
will take place on 6 July. Three other sessions have been scheduled for the
other cases. The judge refused to handle the case of six other students,
and referred them to a supervising judge.
Miir noted that the trial session attracted “significant interest” from
other lawyers and laymen. “The defence team now consists of six lawyers.
Article 152 does not describe what exactly falls under indecent outfit. It
is left to agents of the Public Order Police to decide what it
means.” According to Article 152 of the Criminal Code relating to “indecent
dressing in public and obscene deeds”, the students may be sentenced to a
fine or a maximum of 40 lashes.
