* BOR, July 9, 2015 [Gurtong] – *Although, Jonglei was hard hit during the
2013 December war that broke out causing massive destructions, deaths and
displacements the residents of Jonglei turned out to honor the 50 years of
struggle for freedom.

The celebrations in Bor County was attended by government officials, civil
society groups, faith-based groups, organized forces, schools children and
residents of Bor town.

Speaking at the gathering today Thursday, the Governor of Jonglei State,
John Kong Nyuon said the central government has unconditionally committed
itself to apeaceful solution to the conflict through dialogue.

Kong said the on-going Inter-governmental Authority on development or
IGAD-led peace led negotiations in Addis Ababa and the Arusha interparty
dialogue are government attempts to restore peace and stability in the
country.

“Arusha interparty reconciliation has already given birth to the Sudan
people’s Liberation Movement (SPLM),” John Kong Nyuon the Caretaker
Governor of Jonglei State said.

He said reinstatement of the SPLM Secretary, General Pagan Amum back to his
position and the return of political detainees to Juba, the South Sudan’s
capital city was a step forward to peace and stability in the country.

Bor’s Diocesan Secretary James Deng Akeer during the celebrations also gave
his remarks and said there is hope for lasting peace and reconciliation in
the country.

“Let us go forward, let us pray for peace as churches, let us pray for
peace as all religious denominations regardless of the background if we are
longing for peace. Though our State was much affected let us pray for peace
during this Independence Day,” Deng Akeer said.

Philip Thon Nyok, a Member of Parliament representing Bor town Constituency
said it is important for South Sudanese to honor the years of they struggle
for independence.

In conflict-affected areas, United Nations and relief agencies reported
killings, abductions, and targeted attacks on civilians.

Jonglei State has never been stable since South Sudan gained its
Independence. Although, there was aspiration for peace in 2012, to bring
communities of Jonglei State together, that peace was later interrupted by
the on-going conflict.
