August 2, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni
Minnawi (SLM-MM) issued a statement on the 14th anniversary of its founding
in which it accused the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and the
Arab League (AL) of turning a blind eye and covering up the crimes in
Darfur since the conflict erupted in 2003.

Minnawi said that Darfur experienced exclusion and denial of rights to
effective participation in running the country since Sudan’s independence.

He described the emergence and evolution of revolutionary movements in
Darfur as a natural reaction to the injustices practiced by the central
government in Khartoum.

"The Sudan Liberation Movement was the culmination of the forms of
rejection by the people of Darfur in the face of injustice after which a
revolutionary movement came about with an integrated vision of national
liberation and the struggle to win rights ably to prove the country’s real
identity and to adopt private and public freedoms and fair power-sharing
and wealth distribution formula" reads the statement.

Minnawi blamed Bashir’s government for pushing the country into the abyss
of fueling the conflict in Darfur and the areas of the margin.

He blasted African leaders’ stances as well as the UN & AU for not stopping
the genocide in the region.

"Unfortunately, the Arab League had a hidden role in the cover-up of
Khartoum’s crimes against Darfur”.

Minnawi appealed to the UN Security Council, AU, AL, and IGAD to stand firm
in the face of the Sudanese regime and put an end to its crimes against the
people of Darfur and urged Russia and China to stop supporting Khartoum.

He also implored on Darfuris to unify ranks in the face of injustice and
hailed their great sacrifices for the sake of freedom and dignity.

The rebel chief paid tribute to IDP’s and refugees SLM-MM and Sudan
Revolutionary Front (SRF).

For his part, SLM-MM presidential assistant Abu-Obeida al-Khalifa said that
the celebration of the anniversary coincides with commemorating martyrs of
movement, and saluted the late Abdullah Abakr who is of the SLM-MM founders
and the first Commander in Chief of the their forces.

Khalifa pointed out that "the movement has so far presented about 7,000
martyrs…we salute the families of martyrs and the early founders of the
movement who have sacrificed themselves and who are with us".
