You Cannot Impose Deadline On Peace-making, Says Foreign Affairs Spokesperson South Sudan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Ambassador Mawien Makol Ariik has said that imposing peace on the people of South Sudan will not last calling for negotiations to be conducted in good faith to end the conflict. 02 August 2015
By Jok P Mayom *JUBA, 01 August 2015 [Gurtong]*-Ambassador Ariik told Gurtong in an interview last week that while responding to a statement that was made by the US President, Barrack Obama. On July 28, Obama said South Sudan’s rivalry leaders are not showing seriousness in reaching a peace deal and called for a peace agreement to be reached by August 17. President Obama said “in South Sudan, the joy of independence has descended into the despair of violence. I was there at the United Nations when we held up South Sudan as the promise of a new beginning. Neither Mr. Kiir, nor Mr. Machar have shown, so far, any interest in sparing their people from this suffering, or reaching a political solution.” “We are still saying that imposing peace will not last long and so we are so confident ourselves that peace is going to be reached but it has to be reached through the consensus by the two parties” Ariik explains. However, the Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson said that negotiations must be carriedoutin good faith or may not be successful. “If it is imposed on people, that peace is not going to last forever so what is important for the country is to achieve peace that is going to last for the people of South Sudan, to go back to and continue with development” said Ariik. “If it is imposed, this is not peace it is something else” said Amb. Mawien Makol Ariik . Ariik is calling on the international community to give room for proper dialogue than setting datelines. “We should not be given datelines; we should not be asked if we don’t do this we will be done for that. I think this is not the way forward. It is the cooperation and support to be able to accept and sign peace that is going to be applicable to all of us, that is going to last long and bring development to the people of South Sudan.” The Ambassador assured South Sudanese citizens of the continued effort s of the government in bringing lasting peace in the country. “The government is committed to bring peace that is going to last forever” he said. In his statement during the African Union leaders meeting in Addis Ababa, President Obama said, “we agreed that, given the current situation, Mr. Kiir and Mr. Machar must reach an agreement by August 17th because if they do not, I believe the international community must raise the costs of intransigence.” Posted in: Home <http://www.gurtong.net/ECM/Editorial/tabid/124/ctl/CategoryView/mid/519/categoryId/1/Home.aspx> -- To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected] Visit this group at https://groups.google.com/d/forum/southsudankob View this message at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/southsudankob/topic-id/message-id For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/d/optout --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
