By Peter Lokale Nakimangole JUBA, 30 January, 2016 [Gurtong] – The 26th Summit of the African Union opened last Wednesday morning in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The AU confirmed to the media that it is expected to discuss South Sudan’s crisis with an attempt to address it. In August 2015, South Sudanese Government under the leadership of President Salva Kiir and the rebel movement led by Riek Machar, signed a peace deal but consistently both sides have broken a ceasefire with human rights being continously violated and unabated and with full impunity, the U.N. has said. One of the top issues on the AU's agenda is the ongoing crisis in Burundi expected to be discussed by the 26th summit heads of States. Expected to end on Sunday evening, the two-day summit, according to AU officials, will for the first time in the history, consider whether or not to send peacekeepers to Burundi against its will. Meanwhile, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has issued a statement congratulating H.E. Mr Idriss Deby Itno, President of Chad for being elected as the current AU chairperson. "It is a trust of Africans for your excellency Mr. Deby, to try the chance of leading Africans..." "South Sudanese are expecting President Deby to pressure the partners to the peace agreement to immediately form the transitional government of national unity," Mr. Yakani stressed.
