February 4, 2016 (KHARTOUM) - Sudan’s President Omer Hassan al-Bashir
Thursday announced the resumption of river transport with the
landlocked South Sudan ending a four-year halt decided by Khartoum
over security concerns and accusations of support to rebel groups .

In a speech delivered in the capital of White Nile state, Rabak,
al-Bashir announced the resumption of transport by river between Kosti
and Juba.

The river transport was very active between North Sudan and South
Sudan before and after the secession. Goods were transported by river
barges to Juba or shipped by barge from Juba to Mongalla, Bor, Adok,
Shambe, Malakal and Renk.

The decision of President al-Bashir follows his decisions to open
border and review oil transportation fees. It also come after
statements by President Salva Kiir vowing to improve ties with
Khartoum and increasing bilateral cooperation.

The Sudanese president further said that his country will remain open
for the South Sudanese citizens who flee the armed conflict in their
country and seek refuge in Sudan.

He added that they should be mistreated or held accountable for the
actions of their leaders.

The White Nile state and Khartoum state are the two regions where
reside the majority of the South Sudanese refugees in Sudan.

Nearly 200.000 South Sudanese moved to Sudan since the eruption of the
armed conflict between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and
defectors led by his former deputy Riek Machar in December 2013.

Bashir also inaugurated a power plant in Um Dabakir area at a capacity
of 500 megawatts. He disclosed that they agreed with the Indian
government which constructed the new electricity station to increase
its capacity to 750 megawatts in the near future.

He further vowed to transform the White Nile state to an oil producing
region and to build a new airport in the White Nile state adding it
would be achieved before the new Khartoum international airport.

        Ayuiu,

        In international diplomacy you don’t cast everything in stone;
Bashir is trying to play it smart here.

He’s expecting some concession from Kiir on Abyei, Hufra
Nihas, Kafia Kingi, Mile 14, etc. Given the current economic situation
bedevilling South Sudan, Kiir is again caught between a hard grown and
a stone on this move!

Sudan is very desperate of South Sudan money, that’s the fact.
They want to compete with Uganda’s business in South Sudan. We have to
remember what Sudan foreign ministry said a few months ago " Sudan
lost 7 billion USD for closing its border with South Sudan". Anyway,
it is not a bad thing to have business with our enemies Fake Arabs as
long as they do not mess up with South Sudan’s affairs.

                @ Miidit
I Agree with you, the deal could be good for us,
special greater Upper Nile, prices of commodities will drop, IF we
take it with caution and play it skillfully and smart or else could be
blackmailing, as you know our leaders are weak in making deals, for
example look at oil deal in 2013 and Fashoda Agreement which you may
be familiar with. By the way where is your friend Khent?

You have good reason to be skeptical and caution, yes there’s
reason behind and he try to blackmail and play fool game with
incompetent Kiir. However, we South Sudanese have to be smart too and
play the game alike, though the deal is good for us we have to play it
skillfully. This where Dr. John Garang was good at and master of that.
But I am afraid Kiir will give away country in return.

Once again another mistake is made by opening up the flood gates
of Arabism and Islamism. We must be ready to reread history of Arab
migration to Sudan and its impact on the nation. The people must learn
to be self reliant so that manna from Sudan should not be used to
rewind back the political history of the country.
