Council of Churches to send committee to assess Wau incident
JUBA (4 Jul.)

The chairman of a church committee for peace and reconciliation, Bishop
Paul Yogusuk, says the South Sudan Council of Churches will send a
committee to assess the incidents in Wau town which occurred last Saturday,
calling on the transitional government to implement the peace agreement.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj, Bishop Yogusuk said the committee will
assess the situation and the people affected by the incident in Wau.

He pointed out there are accusations that the government was involved in
the incident but the council of churches could not independently verify it
until the committee is back from Wau. But he pointed out that the
government had something to do with all other incidents that happened in
different areas in South Sudan in the past.

Yogusuk also announced that the 9th of July, Independence Day, will be a
day for prayers for the victims of Wau incidents. The government previously
announced cancellation of celebrations due to lack of funds to host formal
events.

He expressed the concerns of the council of churches about the Wau
incidents, reiterating their commitment towards playing their role in
achieving peace and reconciliation in South Sudan. “The council of churches
is deeply saddened by what happened in Wau and decided to send a committee
to assess the situation of the people affected by the incident,” he said.

The bishop stressed that the only solution to all crisis in the country is
the implementation of the peace agreement, adding that there is no genuine
will from the government to implement the agreement.

“The peace agreement is the only way out because it’s for the people of
South Sudan. Any delays in the implementation will take the country
forward,” said Yogusuk.

He concluded that the people of South Sudan have lost confidence in the
government because there is no any improvement since the formation of the
transitional government of national unity.
