Worth 1,000 Words A handful of photojournalists have been through the Nuba
Mountains since war broke out 5 years ago. Here are their photographs.

It was June 5, 2011, when conflict erupted between Sudan government forces
and the Sudan People's Liberation Army-North (SPLA-N) in the Nuba Mountains
of South Kordofan state. To this day, civilians remain deeply affected by
the war, subjected to regular bombardment and cut off from critical aid.
Others have fled their homes, working to rebuild their lives as refugees

.

International media coverage is scant, making the photos and reporting
about the war all the more rare and important. For the conflict's five-year
anniversary, photojournalists are sharing their photos

of Nuba people, culture and life on our Instagram channel.

The powerful images come from both South Kordofan and Yida, South Sudan,
where Nuba refugees again are faced with whether to stay or go after the UN
ended services there

Plans to repatriate 22 detainees from the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation
Army-North (SPLA-N) have been in the works for months. The operation was
set for June 23-24, and all were ready to go - then the plane never
came. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said the
operation was postponed since final authorization to depart was not
granted, while rebels point the finger at Khartoum. Read the story

Students historically play a large role in change efforts in Sudan, and
also suffer for it. Dozens were arrested and some were even killed in
recent protests. We spoke to the parents of one of those students, from
Nuba, for this piece published by Global Voices. Learn more

The UN officially ended services for refugees in Yida, South Sudan, on June
30, and are urging refugees to relocate. But Yida residents, who have built
livelihoods in Yida, contest the UN's reasons and question security at the
other camps, in this report from PRI. Read the story.
