*Israeli visit signals future African engagement / Oxford Analytica 05.07.16*
Netanyahu will rely on a combination of security, business and diplomacy to win African friends Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu yesterday met with leaders from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and Zambia in Entebbe, Uganda. Netanyahu is the first Israeli prime minister to visit sub-Sharan Africa since 1987, and will also travel to Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda. The prime minister's trip carried personal significance, as his brother was killed 40 years ago during a raid to free hostages in Entebbe. The visit has multiple objectives, including strengthening business ties (the delegation includes 80 Israeli business executives) and improving diplomatic relations. Netanyahu's outreach has already borne fruit, with Tanzania announcing plans to open an embassy in Israel, and Netanyahu attended a regional security meeting. Our judgement Israel will court African states to broaden support in international fora, as its relations with its US and EU allies face further tensions over Israel's stance on the Palestinians. Netanyahu may win over friends by engaging in security issues. Israel could also find allies among states that seek to emulate its economic and security might despite size, such as Rwanda. -- To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected] Visit this group at https://groups.google.com/d/forum/southsudankob View this message at https://groups.google.com/d/msg/southsudankob/topic-id/message-id For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/d/optout --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
