By Agoth Abraham *WANY-JOK, 06 July 2016 [Gurtong]* - At least 3 farmers were killed over the weekend and several others abducted at Macharakoon farm in Aweil East State. Sources revealed that a group of armed men attacked farms over the weekend killing the three farmers and abducted those who were weeding their farms in the early morning of Saturday. Bol Akol, an eye witnessed said he saw some armed group shooting at farmers in their farms as he hid. “I could not tell exactly but what I saw was an unknown number of armed men who came and attacked our fields and started shooting at people before we scattered running for safety.” He explained. “While I was on a tree, I saw some people carrying guns and capturing civilians and I couldn’t make known my presence until they left and I had to rush to the nearby village to report the incident to the nearby authorities.” Akol concluded. Meanwhile the State government’s source only confirmed having knowledge of two people killed and one injured in the attack by the gunmen at Macharakoon village. Ayuel Yai Deng, the newly appointed Minister of Information and Communication, accused a group of Sudanese tribesmen particularly Messeriya men for attacking the farms. He said their sources in the area have confirmed killings of those civilians and kidnapping of several others. He further said that one person who later managed to escape from the hands of the attackers proved that the attackers were the messeriya. The Arab Messeriya and Dinka Malual tribes recently concluded a two weeks peaceful coexistence conference in Aweil East. The two sides agreed to settle all issues between the two tribes and compensate the families of the victims by paying blood money.
