Government investigation into Wau fighting begins
WAU (6 Jul.)

An investigation committee recently formed by the national government in
Juba has started questioning commanders of military forces in Wau town
after recent violence, Akol Akol Ajieth, Mayor of Wau town told Radio
Tamazuj.

Recently, fighting between the SPLA and the SPLA-IO forces displaced around
70,000 people according to the United Nations. Local residents have
demanded an international probe into the fighting.

Ajieth said the committee arrived in Wau on Saturday and began the
investigation with commanders of the regular forces on Monday.

“The committee headed by Dr. Riek Gai Kok has come from Juba, the Minister
of Health is with us here in Wau, so the investigation is ongoing” said
Akol.

Ajieth said out that the committee toured some of the town's neighborhoods
and that the committee’s chairman addressed worshipers in the church on
Sunday. The investigation team said they hope to bring justice.

Mohammed Issa, a Sudanese trader in Wau town, said the death toll of
Sudanese traders in the fighting is at least 11.

Issa explained that they found the body of a trader called Mustafa Ahmed,
who is from the Darfur region.

“The number has increased from 10 to 11, we found the body of one of our
sons from Darfur" Issa said. "We are still waiting for the committee that
will come to assess the losses”
