Wau- 05, August 2016 [Gurtong] – The family broke the silence after
what they described as alarming health deterioration for Waya under
detention in Juba.

“We need our father to be freed or triad in court to determine which
kind of crime he has committed. Our father has been denied access to
justice for a month, which is a jungle law,” said Sara Waya. A
daughter Waya, Sara said that, “justice delay is a justice denied,”

She added, “Everybody is wondering what is now happening on my
father’s case, because if government set the laws, these laws should
be followed. No government could relief it senior official and then
arrest and detain him without trial. We still don’t know now which
crime our father committed. Relieving him was a presidential duty but
detaining him without charge is a challenge to the South Sudan’s
Transitional constitution,” she said.

She also told Gurtong last Wednesday that her father was suffering
from high blood pressure.

Waya was immediately arrested earlier in July this year just two days
after president Salva Kiir issued unexpected republican order firing
him from office in less than nine months since his appointment as the
first governor of Wau state after splitting the 10 states into 28
states.

Elias Waya becomes the second top Kiir’s government official to follow
the former
Western Equatoria State’s governor Joseph Bangasi Bagasoro, who was
later released after spending a year under military jail in Juba.
