Our leadership must work together to bring peace to South Sudan Letter published in the Financial Times, 3rd October 2016, from Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala. Sir, I read with interest John Aglionby’s report “New conflict in South Sudan feared” (September 29 - https://www.ft.com/content/7ed3012e-8593-11e6-8897-2359a58ac7a5). It would be easy to despair of South Sudan, yet I tell my people that we must have hope. This conflict has attracted little attention in Europe, or America, which are dealing with their own crises, such as refugees on European shores, Brexit and mass shootings. However, the international community must continue to play its pivotal role in bringing President Salva Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar to the negotiating table. The constant unrest impedes the delivery of much-needed aid to suffering people. International aid agencies such as Cafod and Trócaire, with their local partners, have kept people alive with necessities such as food, clean water and sanitation. We badly need their humanitarian support to continue. South Sudan does not have to remain poor. It has agricultural potential, minerals and oil, but development has constantly been hampered by conflict. Oil production, the source of most of the country’s earnings, has fallen by more than half from the peak reached shortly before independence. We are a people of one country. Let us not dare to lose this great, God-given opportunity to build a vision of peace through mutual dialogue for the whole of South Sudan. Our leadership must work together, with sincerity and courage, to bring the people of South Sudan the sustainable peace and security they so deserve.
