JUBA, 26 November 2016 [Gurtong]-

The chairperson of the group, Amer Manyok Deng said that the women held a
meeting on Friday at the Kush Resort Hotel in Juba with the representatives
of the displaced persons from different areas including Mangaten, Yei, Juba
2, Mahad amongst others.

“In our meeting, we heard from the IDPs about their dire humanitarian
conditions. We appeal to the South Sudanese people, government and
international partners to support the displaced population” said Manyok.

“We need to support our people who are displaced. We want our government to
be very close to the people” she added.

Dudu Sebit, the Secretary of Finance of the Women Bloc on her part appealed
for help for the displaced persons.“We need them to be given sanitary
facilities, shelter, clean drinking water, food and non-food items and
education. We called upon the government to urgently make response to our
people’s cry.”

Mary Nyibony a member of the bloc said their meeting with the IDPs was to
encourage them and to assure the displaced that the Women Bloc of South
Sudan will pass their grievances to the government. “We will tell the
President to see into the issue of the IDPs.”

The IDPs have expressed conerns over the lack of clean drinking water, food
and non-food items.

Meanwhile, Abuk Mayen Deng, an IDP living in Mangaten hails the government
contribution with partners in providing them with food and tents. She hopes
the same thing can be done to the Yei IDPs sheltering in Juba 2 and other
areas.

IOM said the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) continues to
rise, and has now reached an all-time high of 1.87 million since December
2013, according to recent UN figures.

Over 212,000 IDPs are hosted in UN protection of civilian (PoC) sites
across the country.“Worsening trends of insecurity are preventing IDPs from
returning to their homes in many parts of the country.

While civilians are grappling with deteriorating humanitarian conditions,
access constraints are making it more difficult for IOM and relief agencies
to deliver aid to the most vulnerable, particularly in recent weeks,” said
IOM South Sudan Chief of Mission William Barriga.

IOM said “Violence also continues to drive increased displacement in other
parts of the country, including areas around Yei, Central Equatoria”

Nearly 3 million South Sudanese have fled their homes in the past three
years. With over 1.1 million refugees in neighbouring countries, over
362,000 people have fled the country since July, according to the UN
Refugee Agency.IOM continues to coordinate with relief partners to provide
multi-sector humanitarian assistance to displaced and conflict-affected
people across South Sudan.
