Fate Of Two Detained UNMISS Staff Unknown Amnesty International is calling on the South Sudan authorities to reveal the whereabouts of two UNMISS staff, Anthony Nyero and James Lual, who may have been subjected to enforced disappearance by the National Security Service(NSS).
14 December 2016 JUBA, 14 December 2016 [Gurtong]- Family members have not had any contact with them since January 2016. Their last known place of detention was an NSS facility in Juba town, along the bank of the Nile River. Amnesty International is also calling for unrestricted access to their family members, lawyers of their own choosing, adequate medical care and ensure they are not subjected to torture or ill-treatment. “We are also calling on the government to end arbitrary detentions by the NSS, particularly in the Jebel headquarters and the riverside detention facilities and initiate prompt, effective and impartial investigations into NSS detention practices” said Amnesty International in a press release issued today. The press release further said the Government’s failure to notify UNMISS and show credible evidence of a crime committed by either, prior to taking legal action against Anthony Nyero and James Lual violates the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the UN and the Government of South Sudan.
