MSF urges warring parties to ensure civilian access to emergency healthcare

CRNSaturday, February 4, 2017 - 09:00

Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF is calling on all warring parties in South
Sudan to observe civilian right to access emergency healthcare, clean water
and food.

MSF urges the warring parties to guarantee safety for its medical
facilities; staff and vehicles. Recent fighting in and around Malakal and
Wau Shilluk has left many cut off from healthcare, says the medical agency
in a statement.

20,500 people in Wau Shilluk fled to the bush in January when warring
parties exchanged artillery fire across the Nile, MSF says. MSF says Wau
Shilluk market was hit by mortar fire, forcing the town population to
evacuate.

Medical facilities are also at risk, MSF discloses. MSF says one shell
landed close to its clinic in Malakal town, located on the opposite side of
the Nile from Wau Shilluk. Respect the protected status of medical
facilities to ensure all displaced populations have access to care, the
agency appeals to the warring parties in South Sudan.
