Over 30,000 displaced people face food shortage in Kodok: Official

KODOK (13 Mar.)

More than 30,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are facing a
humanitarian crisis due to shortages of food, water and other basic
services i in Kodok area in Upper Nile State, a senior opposition official
said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, Morris Orach, Minister of Information
in the SPLA-IO controlled area in Fashoda, said the internally displaced
persons fled violence from Wau Shilluk area.Orach further said the
conflict-displaced people lack food, clean drinking water and other basic
services in Kodok area.“We have many displaced people who fled the violence
from Wau Shilluk since January and they are really facing a lot of
humanitarian challenges,” said Orach.“We have a problem of water that is
because their number is huge, we can estimate about 34,000. So, the
situation is forcing them to drink untreated water from the stream, and
this is a big problem here,” he added.

The opposition pointed out that humanitarian organizations came to the area
and registered the IDPs but since then, no assistance has been provided to
the needy people.

Last month, Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman of the UN Secretary General,
told the press that they were worried about an estimated 20, 000 people who
fled violence from Wau Shilluk area.
