UN: Cholera reaches Malakal town

NEW YORK (13 Mar.)

Cholera outbreak in South Sudan has reached Malakal town, the United
Nations said Friday, while the number of cases countrywide has reached
5,574.

In a press briefing in New York on Friday, Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman
for the UN Secretary General, said cholera has been confirmed in 14
counties, with at least 137 deaths since June 2016.Those counties include
the two Mayendit and Leer counties that recently were declared to be in the
grip of famine.

He pointed out that the cholera response in Mayendit remains disrupted
after local authorities told aid workers late last month to leave the area
because of fighting.
