Citizens inside in Juba PoCs call for removal of JMEC chair

JUBA (28 Mar.)

Internally displaced persons in Juba’s UN Protection of Civilian Sites
(PoCs) have called for replacement of Festus Mugae, the chairman of the
Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission(JMEC).

JMEC is the body tasked with monitoring and overseeing the implementation
of the signed peace agreement in South Sudan.

The displaced people on Monday held a peaceful protest demanding the
Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), African Union and the
international community to remove Mogae, whom they claim has not brought
any positive changes since he was appointed. They pointed out that fighting,
killings and violence continue across the country despite the presence of
JMEC.

Adam Koshala, a displaced person inside the UN camp, said, “Mogae is the
cause of delay in the implementation of the peace agreement. So the African
Union and IGAD should replace him with someone who can demonstrate
leadership in handling the peace agreement.”

Koshala, who has been in the UN camp for about three years, said that they
have lost confidence in Mogae who had earlier given them hope that they
could go back to their homes after peace.
