Displaced families in Wau reject government’s relocation plan

WAU (5 Apr.)

Hundreds of internally displaced persons from Jur River, who have found
shelter at the Episcopal Church in Wau town, have rejected a government
plan to relocate them to a new site outside the town.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several displaced families urged the
Wau government to relocate them to the UN Protection of Civilians Site
(PoC) in Wau instead of taking them to Masna Bira area, located about seven
kilometers southeast of Wau town. They pointed out that the new site is not
secure, saying an armed group attacked the area and killed at least two
people and injured three others last Saturday.

For his part, Mel Aleu Goc, the Mayor of Wau town, insisted that the
displaced families will be relocated to the proposed site. He stressed that
the state government will not reverse its relocation plan.Wau town has
recently witnessed rampant insecurity resulting in multiple people
killed or wounded.
