S Sudan diplomats abroad not paid for six months due to cash crunch

JUBA (10 Apr.)

The salaries for South Sudan diplomats in foreign missions have not been
paid for at least six months, Radio Tamazuj has learned.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, a top South Sudanese diplomat who
preferred anonymity confirmed that diplomats in the diplomatic missions
abroad have not been paid for six months because of economic troubles
stemming from the ongoing civil war.He pointed out that their families are
experiencing deteriorating conditions. However, he said they appreciate
great efforts being exerted by the government to resolve the problem.

In March, Mawien Makol Ariik, Spokesman of South Sudan’s Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, admitted that diplomats in the diplomatic missions abroad
were not paid for several months due to economic crisis.Last year, South
Sudan government decided to cut the number of staff at its embassies around
the world due to economic crisis.
