The SPLA acting Spokesperson told journalist on Wednesday that it is
experiencing serious provocations on its defensive positions in the country
that may force them to retaliate if the rebels do not cease hostilities.

This comes after the 31st IGAD extraordinary summit early this week urged
the government and the rebels to observe the unilateral cease fire declared
by President Kiir on the launch of the national dialogue last month.

SPLA says since May 5th, it has experienced 13 attacks on its defensive
forces mainly in Central and Eastern Equatoria, and two attacks in the
former Upper Nile State, killing 32 and wounding 54 people.

Colonel Santo Domic, Chol, the Acting Spokesperson of the army said despite
these provocations, the army has been observing the unilateral ceasefire in
respect of the National Dialogue.“However, if the rebels continue to wage
offensives against the SPLA, the SPLA will be forced to expand its
self-defensive capabilities to ensure and sustain a wider protection zone
for our citizens to enjoy stability and free movement of business trucks,”
said colonel Domic.

The army Spokesman also acknowledged that the security situation in Upper
Nile is deteriorating since 9th of June after rebels launched attacks on
the border town of Kuek, Kolla, and Ghabat.

The rebels earlier said they have captured the town of Kuek, a claim
dismissed by Col Domic. He accused the Sudanese government of providing
support for the rebels in the region. He says the SPLA has enough evidence
showing the Sudanese government is supporting the rebels operating in the
northern regions of South Sudan.
