RUMBEK, 29 June 2017 [Gurtong]–This follows a two-day peace conference that
was this week concluded between conflicting tribes in Rumbek.

The Executive Chief of Akok section of Rup community, Madol Mading Maguar
urged the government of Western Lakes State to take the report of the
violation of the 2-day peace conference chaired by the Governor of Western
Lakes State very seriously and speed up disarmament of the Gelwong army
youth across Western Lakes State.

“We have really realized Gony army youth are not respecting the Governor or
otherwise it is the Governor, Matur Chut who is using this peace conference
as a ploy for Gony arms Youth to get rid of us and our properties” said the
Executive Chief.

Some of the resolutions that were signed during the two day peace
conference included disarmament and restraint from further revenge
killings.“We were warned by the Governor that whoever violates and
continuous with revenge killings or resist to hand over guns to the army
during the disarmament process must face the full force of the law and
punishment.” said Chhief Madol.

The Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, Abraham Mayen
Kuc Adhil however, said that no report of killings or looting has been
brought to his attention.“I would have confirmed this from the Commissioner
of Malek County, but unfortunately the Commissioner was relieved on
Tuesday, otherwise there is no report that has reached my office about a
person killed in Ror-nhom” said the Minister of Local Government.

The government of South Sudan this week deployed a huge security force in
Rumbek to disarm and return raided cattle to rightful owners. This came
after the Intra-communal fighting between Rup and Pakam last week that
claimed lives of more than 30 people in Western Lakes State.
