NGOs concerned by aid restrictions in Yei

A group of international and national NGOs operating in Yei River State has
accuse the state government and opposition forces of blocking their supply
routes to the needy populations.

The organizations’ officials told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that they can
only provide aid to the populations in the urban areas but they cannot
access the needy populations in the rural counties of the state.

An official, who preferred anonymity, said most of medical and agricultural
supplies may expire if the situation does not change.“We have huge
quantities of drug supplies, seeds and other essential items that are
supposed to benefit the rural areas but another worrying thing is that
these items being stocked in the town are almost getting expired. It will
be a total wastage of resources if nothing is done to address this
situation” he said.

Another NGO official said they have planned a rapid consortium response to
the rural population but it can only succeed if they are granted free
movement.“We can’t access them. We have lined up programs targeting
thousands in the rural areas with farm crop implements, fishing equipment
and medicines targeting people outside the Yei town area but since there is
no accessibility, we could not go there,” he lamented.

The officials said they have reported the security concerns to the state
authorities but nothing has been done to secure access to the rural
communities.

Earlier, Yei River State Governor David Lokonga assured the people and
organizations operating in the area, that the state government will grant
access to all counties in the state.
