Rural to urban mobility research project holds inception workshop <http://riftvalley.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=bbe4bf6326e7666108dd11e6f&id=d299e0b29c&e=6bfad24c45> >From 28–29 July, RVI held an inception workshop for its research project on rural to urban mobility in the Horn of Africa. Commissioned by the SOAS-led, EU-funded Research and Evidence Facility (REF), RVI will undertake research in Gulu, Uganda, Dire Dawa, Ethiopia and in Eldoret, Kenya, on migration to and from secondary cities. The research will try to understand what role rural-urban migration plays in enhancing people’s livelihoods and resilience, what the impact is of people’s movement into secondary cities on infrastructure and services, social cohesion, and security, and how migration to secondary cities affects subsequent migration. As part of this project, RVI is working with a team of researchers, most of whom have been trained in oral history research under the project, to conduct research with customary authorities and their constituents in different parts of South Sudan, and amongst displaced communities outside its borders.
