** 50 years of hurt: Togo protesters vow to continue
(http://africanarguments.org/2017/08/25/50-years-of-hurt-togo-protesters-vow-to-continue/)
------------------------------------------------------------

Last weekend, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in Togo.
They called for the 1992 constitution, which included presidential
term limits and a two-ballot system, to be reinstated and called for
change after 50 years of rule by the Gnassingbe dynasty.

In some areas, protesters were met with tear gas and bullets, leading
to at least two deaths. Togolese say they will continue their struggle
this weekend.

------------------------------------------------------------

It was not long ago that large discoveries in Uganda and Kenya led
some to believe that oil would transform East Africa. Yet years later,
the region is still waiting. Where's the oil? What happened to those
pipelines? Why the delays?

The answer, in short, is politics, which continues to determine the
future of the opportunity.

------------------------------------------------------------

Two years on from the crisis, Burundians continue to leave the country
citing political and security fears as well as economic challenges.

The government insists that Burundi is safe for their return. But many
refugees say that they will only go back home under three conditions.

Last weekend in Pretoria, the leaders of the Southern African
Development Community met to discuss challenges facing the region. On
the agenda was the political crisis in the Democratic Republic of
Congo.

On this issue, South Africa and Angola have particular leverage. They
may be distracted by domestic concerns, but they neglect the DRC at
the region's peril.
